Digital detox: how to disconnect from technology and reconnect with yourself

The mobile phone has become an indispensable tool for almost everything. We are not only talking about having a virtual phone book where we write down numbers or birthdays, but also a device from which we carry out purchases, consult the internet, even work.

This dependence on the mobile phone causes us to be hooked to a screen all day. This, added to the television or screens at work, ends up causing a state where being connected is a habit. Despite the advantages it may have, this dependence on technology also has several associated problems such as stress, problems at bedtime or attention span.

Faced with this type of problem, new concepts arise such as the digital detox, a way of disconnecting from technology in a mountain campsite in the Catalan Pyrenees. It is not about disconnecting from technology completely, but about regaining control over it, over how and when we use it.

What is a digital detox?

Digital detox is also known as digital detox. Basically, carrying out this digital detox means voluntarily limiting the use of devices such as a mobile phone, computer, tablet or social networks for a certain period of time.

The duration and conditions may be different depending on the needs of the person. For some people, this digital break may mean not using only the mobile phone, while others need to get away from more screens to achieve better digital well-being.

How do you know if you need to disconnect from your phone and screens?

There is no universal number of hours that determines whether or not a person needs a digital detox. Despite this, some habits can serve as a signal to know that you need todisconnect from your mobile or make a change.

If you check your phone automatically every few minutes, you need to check notifications constantly or check social networks every so often, you may want to consider reducing your mobile phone use and, to do so, carry out a digital detox.

An unmistakable sign that you need to disconnect from your mobile and screens is if your mobile phone regularly interferes with your moments of rest or with the time you spend with other people. If you are in a conversation with several friends in a restaurant and you take out your phone or wake up in the middle of the night and the first thing you do is check your mobile, these are not healthy habits at all and you should check your digital health.

Benefits of doing a digital detox

There are many benefits to temporarily reducing your device usage. First, you’ll be able to pay more attention to the activities you’re doing. By eliminating interruptions by using less screen time, you’ll be able to spend more time on a conversation, walk, or other activity that competes squarely with your phone’s notifications.

A digital detox is also perfect for being aware of our own digital habits and, therefore, learning to make better conscious use of technology. Another important benefit is to recover leisure spaces that do not depend on a screen, such as cooking, playing board games, walking, playing sports…

In essence, the goal of a digital detox is to find a digital balance that leads to technological well-being. Avoid this excessive dependence on mobile phones and live not so dependent on this technology.

How to do a digital detox step by step

At our resort, you can carry out a digital disconnect with all kinds of facilities. A digital detox can be carried out progressively, so you won’t have to turn off all your devices to fully experience the disconnection.

The first step is to determine what you want to limit. Maybe the problem is not using your mobile phone, but making use of social networks from it. You can start by establishing a period of disconnection from these networks and then extend it to an afternoon or a weekend.

Don’t worry about always being available. Let the people you usually talk to know that you’re going to perform this disconnect so they don’t worry about you and, as much as possible, don’t bother you with interruptions.

How long should a digital detox last?

There is also no set duration in a digital detox. As we have seen before, this can be carried out little by little and, for example, go from afternoons to weekends, whatever you need.

To achieve a first experience without this digital overload, try a short period and do not hesitate to increase it as you feel comfortable with it.

What to do during a digital detox

In our resort you can find many activities to do during a digital detox. Here you can enjoy everything from massages and water circuits, to long walks in nature.

Our proximity to the villages of Berguedà will allow you to spend quality time discovering their culture, gastronomy or visiting some of their viewpoints. You can spend the afternoon playing board games with the family or cook all together at night.

There are a large number of activities that can be carried out to rest and relax, both outdoors and indoors without digital distractions.

Digital detox as a family: how to disconnect from screens with children

Practicing digital detox as a family is much simpler and has many additional advantages. The simplicity is due to the fact that it can be considered as a shared activity and not a prohibition, so it is easier for the little ones to participate in it.

On the other hand, it is a perfect opportunity to spend quality time as a family without digital distractions. What is important in these cases is to set an example with the children. This means that it does not make much sense to ask children to put down screens while the older ones are continuously glued to them.

Digital detox as a couple: recover time without interruptions

The mobile phone can also occupy an important space in relationships. Practicing digital detox as a couple can be a solution so that conversations are not interrupted by looking at the mobile.

Practicing digital detox as a couple helps to recover moments of conversation that may have been missed and shared activities without digital automatisms such as checking the mobile continuously.

To practice detox as a couple, the easiest and most practical thing is to enjoy a romantic weekend getaway.

Why nature is a good setting to disconnect from technology

Nature is the perfect space to disconnect from technology because there are far fewer digital stimuli than in a city. Here the stimuli are related to the environment, since when walking next to the mountain the attention is focused on the landscape, the sound of the environment or the conversation with the person next to us.

On the other hand, being away from home helps to break some of the routines that we have associated with the phone. It is not that nature is completely isolated from society, far from it, simply a change of environment can help a lot to change and disconnect from certain habits.

Berguedà, a mountain environment to change screens by nature

The Berguedà is the perfect mountain environment to change the screens for nature. In our resort you can enjoy natural spaces, routes and all kinds of proposals related to the mountains.

One of the main attractions is the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park, as you can take many hiking trails, visit viewpoints and natural spaces where you can do outdoor activities.

The goal is not to run away from technology in any case, but to recover for a few days other ways to spend time in a healthier way without the stress of being constantly glued to these screens.

Carrying out these detoxes from time to time will help you control your mobile phone much better and make conscious use of it, so you will never be a slave to technology again. You will also discover that it is possible and, moreover, healthy, to enjoy a holiday without a mobile phone thanks to detox.
