According to legend, a Gothic carving of the Virgin was found by a shepherd from Vilaformiu in the cave of Santa Helena. The shepherd tried to take the image to his house, but it always disappeared and reappeared again in its original cave. The inhabitants of Berga understood this act as a divine message and built a chapel in his honor in that place. <\/p>

Over the years the sanctuary has undergone many extensions and renovations. The Church of the Cave is the oldest part of the site and was where the image was found, while the main Sanctuary was built on the rock so that it blends into the landscape seamlessly. <\/p>
