Sanctuary of Queralt in Berga: history, routes and unique views

One of the best things about being able to enjoy a good camping bungalow rental if you visit Berga is the connection with nature.

At Berguedà it is not only about being able to enjoy fully equipped bungalows, but also about the entire natural environment that surrounds it. One of the highlights that is worth a visit is the Sanctuary of Queralt, also known as the “Balcony of Catalonia” due to the spectacular views it has.

Santa Coloma de Queralt how to get there

There are several ways to access the Sanctuary of Queralt, so you can choose the option that is best or most comfortable for you. One of the easiest is Berga by car. To do so, you’ll need to take the BV-4141 road, a road that winds its way to the shrine’s own parking lot.

Berga is one of the favourite locations for all those who enjoy hiking, so it is of course possible to go to the sanctuary on foot. For this you can choose several routes, from the Camino de la Solana or the Chapels, to the Camino de la Umbría. You should bear in mind that they are climbs with a considerable slope, but they are not very long either, as they are about 3 kilometres at most.

If you are looking for something quieter, there is also the option of a funicular. This funicular runs from the lower car park to the esplanade of the Sanctuary, which will avoid the climb to the sanctuary.

What to see in the Sanctuary of Queralt

The Sanctuary of Queralt has many interesting things to see. First of all, the Sanctuary itself. It is the church and the main building of the complex, a building dating back to the eighteenth century built on the rock of the mountain.

To learn about the legend first-hand, you have to visit the Cova de la Troballa. In this cave is the small chapel that was built in the place where the shepherd found the image of the Virgin.

The Sanctuary of Queralt is also one of the favorite places among hiking lovers. This is due to the beautiful views that can be seen from it. On clear days you can enjoy panoramic views of Berguedà, Montserrat and also the Mediterranean Sea, a gift for the eyes.

Sanctuary of Queralt: history

In addition to its beauty, another of the attractions of this Sanctuary of Queralt is the history that accompanies it. We are talking about a sanctuary that has its origins in the devotion to the Virgin of Queralt, which gives its name to the sanctuary, an image that was found in the fourteenth century according to legend.

According to legend, a Gothic carving of the Virgin was found by a shepherd from Vilaformiu in the cave of Santa Helena. The shepherd tried to take the image to his house, but it always disappeared and reappeared again in its original cave. The inhabitants of Berga understood this act as a divine message and built a chapel in his honor in that place.

Over the years the sanctuary has undergone many extensions and renovations. The Church of the Cave is the oldest part of the site and was where the image was found, while the main Sanctuary was built on the rock so that it blends into the landscape seamlessly.

The devotional importance of the Virgin was evident when she was canonically crowned in 1916.
