Among the many things you can do in Berguedà, one of the most interesting is the groundhog route. If you want to learn more about this particular rodent that gives its name to its route, the best thing to do is to come to our mountain campsite in the Catalan Pyrenees.

Here you will find more information about the groundhog route with the aim of arousing your curiosity and come to make this great route that more and more adventurous hiking enthusiasts enjoy.

Bagà Groundhog Route

This groundhog route owes its name to the animal and, along the route, you will be able to observe these animals in total freedom, as well as the ecosystem where they live. It is also important to note that the groundhog route is educational.

This is because along the route you will find many explanatory signs about the groundhog, so it will help you get to know this animal much better. The route is perfect so that, while enjoying a walk in nature, you can learn many things.

What is the Groundhog Route?

The marmot route is one of the best-known routes that can be enjoyed in the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park. Along this route you will be able to see more marmots in their habitat in complete freedom.

As a curiosity, the marmot became extinct in the Catalan Pyrenees during the glaciations. The marmots that you will find along this route are due to the fact that they were introduced in 1948 in the French Pyrenees from the Alps. As the years went by, they were reproduced and in 1974 they arrived in Catalonia. It would be in 1996 when they appeared for the first time in the Cadí-Moixeró.

Groundhogs are not the only excuse to enjoy this route, as it also has some points of interest that are worth knowing. In this way, the spectacular Cavallers reservoir, the Riumalo waterfall, llastres de la Morta or the Estany Negre are some of the reasons why you should take this route.

Details of the route: distance, difficulty and duration

The groundhog route is a relatively simple route. This means that you should not have any problem completing the route if it is your first time hiking or you want to do it with small children.

The approximate distance is about 5.5 kilometers and it is a circular route, that is, it is only a return route since it begins and ends in the same place. It will take you about 3 hours to complete.

Landscapes and biodiversity on the Groundhog Route

There are many things to see on the route besides groundhogs. Nature lovers will be able to delight in the black pine, which is the dominant tree in the mountain forests, but also with the firs, beeches or heather that they will find along the way as well as all kinds of alpine flowers.

As for the fauna, take a good pair of binoculars with you if you want to feast on golden eagles, griffon vultures, great or great spotted woodpeckers. In addition, if you are lucky and attentive, you may see some chamois.

Tips to make the most of the trail

In our opinion, the best time to enjoy this groundhog route is between the months of June and October. The temperatures are much more pleasant and you can also enjoy the native fauna more easily.

When it comes to dressing, you should wear comfortable shoes to make the path easier for you. An interesting tip is to dress in layers. This is because you are going to do a mountain route and, therefore, the weather is quite changeable. By dressing in layers, you can wrap up or take off your clothes to better adapt to the temperature of the moment.

To make the most of the route and get a better experience, we recommend that you arrive early on it. Arriving early on the route will give you more opportunities to see groundhogs, make the most of the day, and most importantly, avoid crowds.

Finally, we recommend that you also bring the right equipment. For panoramic views, bring a good pair of binoculars. Don’t forget to also bring some food and water to stay hydrated when enjoying this unique experience.
